The Last of Us is arguably one of the biggest gaming franchises, developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. The first two games were critically acclaimed for a multitude of reasons, and it would make no sense if the developers were to discontinue the story, especially after the ambiguous ending of the sequel.
Fans want to see Ellie redeem herself after her past transgressions from her quest fuelled by rage and pain for vengeance in Part 2. Director Neil Druckmann hinted at the possibility of a third project to wrap up the series. Perhaps a happy ending is waiting for Ellie and Dina after all.
The Gaming Community Wants to See Ellie Do Something Good in The Last of Us Part 3
The gaming community is still reeling after the events of The Last of Us Part 2 and is confused about where the developers will take the characters in the inevitable sequel. Chances are the game is already being worked on, and Alien: Romulus director Fede Alvarez might have some secret insider information after visiting the offices of Naughty Dog.
After celebrating the fourth anniversary of The Last of Us Part 2, Druckmann subtly hints another game is on the way. Similar to how the Grounded 2 documentary ended, the director confirmed a small story about Tommy taking place after the sequel was written but has no plan to make it sometime soon. Ellie has been through an emotional and traumatic journey throughout these games and made awful decisions that affected her relationships.

Druckmann did not hold back and gave Ellie every reason to kill anything that stood in her way as her mental health slowly declined, highlighting the advanced gore and dismemberment features of the game. She showed no signs of remorse after killing countless WLF soldiers and Scars in Seattle and broke free from her bloodlust after she accidentally killed a pregnant Mel, and some fans would argue this was the worst scene of The Last of Us Part 2.
The fan-written redemption story perfectly fits with the ambiguous ending of The Last of Us Part 2. Ellie could reside outside of Jackson and rarely interact with the townsfolk and like in line with the previous games, something terrible would happen that would send her on a heroic quest. Ellie did have a superhero complex, as seen in the first game, with her hope to heal the world with her immunity; The Last of Us Part 3 could offer her a moment to accomplish that goal.
Redemption Could Be the Theme of The Last of Us Part 3
The gaming community walked in Ellie’s shoes throughout her quest, which she thought was righteous. Ellie and her friends ended the lives of Abby’s friends to get even with what they did and both characters want to break free from the pain and cycle of hate. Abby and Lev will most likely return at some point and Druckmann could pivot the narrative to where these two unlikely heroines join forces for the greater good and seek redemption together.
The first game was about Joel learning to love in a world that took everything away from him, while The Last of Us Part 2 was about hate and, in the end, learning to forgive and accept that some things can never be the same. The Last of Us Part 3 could wrap up the trilogy and show that humanity is worth saving and there is always room for improvement.
A third game would present an opportunity to showcase new Infected variations and highlight the evolution process. Players loved the intense combat scenarios in The Last of Us and giving Ellie something new to fight would up the stakes as she will act as the protector of JJ, similar to how Joel was to her.
Naughty Dog is an expert in this craft. There is no telling where the third game will go.
