“I wanted him to start out dark and…”: Star Wars Fans Can Scream All They Want But Code Geass Director Will Never Accept One Accusation about Lelouch

For years, Code Geass has been considered to be inspired by Star Wars. It is considered to be a series that embodies the soul of Star Wars and all of its extensions. The rebellion in the story along with the resistance, the struggle against the empires, colonialism and more make Code Geass similar to Star Wars in many aspects.

The Lelouch Vs. Suzaku’s struggle reminds fans of Anakin Vs. Obi-Wan. Code Geass does not contain any space battles or journeys across space that Star Wars has popularized. However the main theme of rebellion is properly showcased in the series. Thus, fans often call it a rip-off, but for those of you who do, the creator of Code Geass has a few stern pieces of advice.

Lelouch is Considered to be Similar to Darth Vader

Lelouch from Code Geass and Star Wars’ Anakin Skywalker seems to have a lot more in common than what meets the eye. They were both prodigies who were cheated out of their respective legacies. Anakin could never become the Jedi Master. As for Lelouch, he lost his place in the Britannian royalty.

After these rejections, both Darth Vader and Lelouch transformed themselves. Each hid their identity and sought the chance to strike back. It is often considered that Lelouch dragged the world into war and darkness because he needed to satisfy his ego and ruin the ones who denied his rightful position. He never did it to free the people of the land.

Similarly, Darth Vader created a rule of tyranny just so that his anger and rage could be spilled over and over again. Last but not least, both Lelouch and Darth Vader died while trying to redeem themselves.

Code Geass is directed by Goro Taniguchi and written by Ichiro Okouchi. In an interview with Goro Taniguchi, Lelouch’s similarities with other characters from different media were mentioned. Lelouch was compared to Char an iconic Gundam character. Char is charismatic, and respected by his subordinates. However, he has a cold interior and can do anything to achieve his goals.

Goro Taniguchi only had a single answer to the assumptions that Lelouch was inspired by Char:

If I had to pin it down, I’d say it’s closer to Star Wars than Gundam. I wanted Suzaku to be in a white robot at first and then a black one at the end, just like Luke Skywalker’s clothes.

Goro Taniguchi then immediately dove into addressing Lelouch’s similarity with Darth Vader. Critics and fans alike have been comparing Code Geass to Star Wars and it must have reached the creators of the series as well. Taniguchi admitted that he never aimed at creating a Star Wars knockoff.

It’s not like I wanted the main character to be a Darth Vader copy, but I wanted him to start out dark and gradually turn white, slowly getting redeemed. So I think it’s more like Star Wars.

While Code Geass does have a lot of elements that are similar to Star Wars, the plots are entirely different. It could be called a homage rather than an anime knockoff of a popular franchise.

You can watch Code Geass on Crunchyroll.
