Post-time skip Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece has a pretty huge chest scar whose memories are equally scarring. The death of his sworn brother, Portgas D. Ace, is one of the saddest arcs in One Piece history. But did you know that Luffy has previously had this peculiar scar and not from the terrifying marine, Akainu?
Roronoa Zoro, Luffy’s right hand and the swordsman of the Straw Hat Pirates, had quite an unfortunate mishap during the Ocean’s Dream Arc. Zoro ends up hypnotized and uses his iconic onigiri fighting style against Luffy, leaving an X-shaped scar on him. However, it’s important to note that the Ocean’s Dream Arc is a filler arc and the X mark is thinner than his current one.
What Happened in the Ocean’s Dream Arc of One Piece?
The Ocean’s Dream Arc isn’t the best filler arc, but it is worth watching. It ran from episode 220-224 for anyone interested. The Straw Hats land on a mysterious island but except for Nico Robin, everyone else’s memories get erased during their sleep. Chaos ensues as none of them believes they are friends with our swordsman Zoro leaving the ship entirely, going back to his Bounty Hunter days.
Robin isn’t much help to jog their memories as the newest addition to the crew but what they do have in common is that they all dreamt about a boy underwater blowing an instrument. Thanks to Luffy’s impulsiveness, he breaks the instrument and their memories are restored but unfortunately for them, Zoro is still missing and the boy has hypnotised the powerful man. This leads to him attacking Luffy but eventually, he regains back his consciousness and they reunite with the others.
There’s a twist, however, that the boy was also under the spell of the seahorse who tries to hypnotize the rest. The seahorse pulls out his trump card: showing everyone their loved ones, and their biggest enemies, making them vulnerable and losing their memories once again. It’s all a bit rushed after that. Luffy just beats up the seahorse and sends him flying. The villagers are, unfortunately, not all that impressed and they are forced to flee.
What Did Akainu Do to Luffy in the Marineford Arc of One Piece?
Well, I think it would be shorter to say what he didn’t do to our future King of the Pirates. In the canon manga and anime, it’s confirmed that Akainu gave Luffy the scar we see today. Marineford was traumatising for anyone to witness but none suffered more than Monkey D. Luffy. After all the effort he went through to save Portgas D. Ace, Akainu’s motivations are just too radical. The admiral took advantage of his vulnerable state and dealt great damage as well.
With the help of several characters, namely Jinbe, Marco the Phoenix and Trafalgar D. Water Law, Luffy lived to complete his journey. The resilience Luffy exhibited during the Impel Down Arc to Marineford was impeccable. However, villains are villains for a reason and main characters can’t always win. Akainu might’ve won this round but we hope to see his downfall one day with Luffy at his peak now.
