The latest arc of the series, the Dark Continent Arc, is introducing multiple characters for the Succession Contest.
Part of the reason why the chapters are becoming so text-heavy is due to the introduction of various characters to the story. A fan theory states that Togashi might attempt to introduce another character in the ongoing arc.
Yoshihiro Togashi Might Introduce a Third Freecss in Hunter x Hunter
According to a fan theory, Yoshihiro Togashi might re-introduce a third Freecss in the ongoing Dark Continent Expedition arc. This character is Don Freecss. Don Freecss does not have many mentions in the series, but it is known that he is the supposed author of Journey to the New World, a journal about the Dark Continent.
Don traveled to the Dark Continent over 300 years ago and wrote his traveler’s journal, which consisted of two volumes: East and West. While the East edition is in the hands of the V6, the West edition was never found. According to Ging Freecss, either the West edition was never actually written, or Don is still writing it. There is a vague hint at the fact that Don Freecss might actually be alive.
The fan theory claims that Don might have been a hunter before the Hunter Association Exam had even begun. It also claims that the next mission of Gon might be to start hunting Don. While it is not confirmed yet, Don Freecss might be related to Gon and Ging due to their similar last names. Will this be a long-awaited family reunion?
How can Don Freecss Still be Alive in Hunter x Hunter?
If Don Freecss was alive over 300 years before the current storyline, there is no way for him to still exist. However, in the world of Hunter x Hunter, there are ways to achieve immortality. Both of these ways are actually found in the Dark Continent, the place that Don Freecss documented.
The first way is via Nitro rice, a cereal presumably found in the Dark Continent that is the ultimate secret to longevity. While Nitro rice can extend one’s life, it is unknown how long the person can live or if immortality can be achieved through it. When the Federation of Ochima attempted to retrieve it, most of the members fell prey to the Hellbells present in the swamps of the rice.
The second and more terrifying way is to catch the Zobae disease. It is one of the five threats that humanity met in the Dark Continent. The sickness enables a person to live without sustenance for years, and the affected becomes immune to death. However, it is achieved by feeding on one’s own flesh, and the sickness accelerates the regeneration of tissues. However, the mental toll that it takes is too great. It is possible that either Don has access to nitro rice or he has simply caught Zobae, to stay alive for so long.
