Johnny Depp fans are probably aware that the actor speaks in English and French, and during one of the awarding ceremonies he attended in France, the actor delivered a speech in straight French. It’s no wonder though because he was previously in a relationship with French actress Vanessa Paradis.
Because of his outstanding work in the cinema industry, he became the recipient of the French César Awards. The actor accepted his accolade with grace and a speech he recorded beforehand.

On March 6, 1999, Johnny Depp received the Honorary César, the highest honorary prize from France’s Academy of Arts and Techniques of Cinema at the 24th César Awards ceremony held at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, in Paris, France.
The actor, known for his works in the ‘80s and ‘90s such as A Nightmare on Elm Street, Edward Scissorhands, and Sleepy Hollow, gave a message in the French language. In the video clip posted below, he thanked the award-giving body for the honor and also asked to excuse his “terrible” French. He also shyly admitted he’s not good with speeches so he prepared a recorded audio for everyone to listen to.
In the recording, he expressed his personal sentiments regarding winning prizes and competitions. “The only one I’m fighting is me to go further each time in my work”. Depp also noted that “no one is better than another” and that everyone is just different. He extended his gratitude for the honor he received from France.
Meanwhile, fans in the comments could not help but gush over Depp’s charismatic use of the French tongue. Although he isn’t a native speaker, he managed to deliver his message with so much sincerity and respect.
On Instagram, user pavlafleischer_v2 said, “He was so beautiful when young” while elimaehearts wrote, “I thought he couldn’t get any hotter”. Another fan marylousieeller stated, “His French is beautiful… wish he would speak it more” while sa_mi_ha_ha_ha quipped, “Him speaking French is giving me butterflies”.
Fans are evidently swooning over Depp’s suave use of the language in his speech. The fact that he looked good here at age 35, his voice also had a soothing effect on the listeners.

The last time fans heard Depp speak in French was probably in his 2023 French-language film Jeanne du Barry. The movie marked the actor’s return to acting after his lengthy court battle against ex-wife Amber Heard.
Depp delivered all of his lines in the said language, but the writers kept them concise to make him appear as a native speaker. Although he is good at it, the actor admits he is sometimes uncomfortable and still struggles. For the 61-year-old star, he understands it more than he can speak which is a natural thing for non-native speakers.
