House of the Dragon has famously managed to maintain the legacy that its parent series, Game of Thrones, created over the course of eight seasons. When the show was first announced, audiences were skeptical. However, the first season managed to prove the need for the show’s existence, giving a window into a family that was at the center of the parent series but never seen to its full capabilities.
The second season, however, has failed to meet the standards set by the first in the eyes of many fans. It would seem that they aren’t the only ones who feel this way, as recently, an actor from the original series spoke along similar lines.
Recently, Kristian Nairn, who played the role of Hodor, confessed that he wasn’t very impressed with the second season of the series.
Kristian Nairn’s Thoughts on House of the Dragon
Recently, Kristian Nairn gave an interview with ScreenRant, where he talked about his thoughts on House of the Dragon. Since he was a part of Game of Thrones, the actor mentioned that he cannot help but compare the two works. With this in mind, he revealed that he seriously enjoyed the first season of the new show.
Of course I do [compare them]. It’s like a different semester or term in college or school, we’re like the older generation. I was at a convention recently with Tom [Glynn-Carney, who plays Aegon on House of the Dragon] and I was just interested to watch him go do all the PR stuff and, yeah, I’m proud of them.
He further elaborated on his thoughts on the first chapter of the Targaryen story. He stated that the first season felt almost like a continuation of the parent show, as though the first season was only another story that Game of Thrones was telling. Nairn even went as far as to say that he was proud of what the show achieved when it first came out.
They don’t need me to be proud of them obviously, but season 1 I think was off the charts. I think it was almost as good as Game of Thrones. I think it felt almost like a continuation, although it’s in the past, I felt like it was just the next episode or something.
Such words coming from someone who was a part of the original series hold a lot of value. However, what he had to say about the second season may disappoint some fans.
The Second Season Blues?
Kristian Nairn then talked about his thoughts on the second season of House of the Dragon. Starting off honestly, he mentioned that it felt a lot different than the first and the majority of Game of Thrones. However, he was very clear about the fact that he did not mean this in a negative way.
I don’t think the same about season 2, but I can say that without being negative. I don’t think it’s bad. I do really like it, but to me it’s something different. I don’t know if I’m wrong about this, but I’ve spoke to a few people about it and I don’t think I’m too far off the mark. It just feels different.
He mentioned that in no way was he trying to imply that the second season of the series was bad. Instead, he simply wanted to emphasize the fact that it felt different compared to the rest of the series. He even added that he talked to the people about his opinion, and many agreed with what he was saying.
There’s a vibe, there’s a heavy Game of Thrones vibe throughout the show. And to me it’s just different. But I’m still going to keep watching. I think it just feels a bit different to me. That’s all. I’m sure that could be twisted into the fact that I fu**ing hate it, but I don’t. I really like it. I love fantasy in all forms and I’m loving the dragons in this one. That’s incredible.
Although Nairn was worried that his words would be twisted in a way that made it seem that he hated the new season of the show, he wanted to clarify that this wasn’t the case in the slightest. Despite this criticism, he mentioned that he is enjoying the series a lot and will continue watching it as more seasons are released.
