McDonald’s CEO ‘not ruling out’ beef as possible source of horror E. coli outbreak that has left one dead & dozens sick

MCDONALD’S is still investigating the root cause of the horrific E. coli outbreak that left at least one person dead and dozens sick.

The fast-food giant abruptly yanked its popular Quarter Pounders from one-fifth of US stores on Tuesday and is now dealing with the fallout.

McDonald’s bosses believe the infection came from an onion supplier, but the CEO is still looking at whether beef was contaminated, Bloomberg reported.

At least 50 people fell ill after consuming the burgers, and 10 of those were hospitalized for treatment.

E. coli infection causes deadly gastrointestinal effects, including diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and fever.

Those with severe cases can develop urinary tract infections, meningitis, or even sepsis, which can prove fatal.

The Quarter Pounder infections were mainly found in Colorado, and about nine cases have been identified in neighboring Nebraska.

The first horror case was reported on September 27.

McDonald’s yanked the menu item from restaurants in a dozen states, and executives are desperately trying to convince consumers that the rest of the menu is safe.

Regular hamburgers and cheeseburgers are still being offered, along with all chicken and potato products, CEO Chris Kempczinski confirmed.

E. coli spreads through raw vegetables and uncooked beef, so meat is normally safe from the bacteria.

However, Kempczinski said they’re still scrutinizing their beef products, which come from multiple suppliers.

McDonald’s stock plummeted following the E. coli death and completely erased the company’s 6% year-to-date gain.

Anyone living in Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oregon, Utah, Wisconsin, or Wyoming is advised to monitor their condition if they ate a Quarter Pounder recently.

“If you have severe symptoms of E. coli infection after eating a Quarter Pounder hamburger at McDonald’s, seek health care and tell your provider about what you ate,” a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) alert reads.

According to the CDC, it’s unlikely they will ever know the total number of consumers affected, as it can take a month to link someone to the outbreak.

In response to the outbreak, Joe Erlinger, President of McDonald’s USA, made media appearances to “restore confidence” with customers.

“We are very confident that you can go to McDonald’s and enjoy our classics,” he told the Today show.

“We took swift action yesterday to remove the Quarter Pounder from our menu.

“That was swift and decisive action by us.

“We’re confident that, that we’ll see our way through this and we’ll restore confidence for the American consumer to come to McDonald’s.”

Anyone with questions about the outbreak is advised to call their state’s health department.

McDonald's E. coli outbreak

McDonald's North America Chief Supply Chain Officer Cesar Piña issued the following statement in response to the E. coli outbreak that has killed one and left 49 sick.

“Across the McDonald’s System, serving customers safely in every single restaurant, each and every day, is our top priority and something we’ll never compromise on.

“It is why we are taking swift and decisive action following an E. Coli outbreak in certain states. The initial findings from the investigation indicate that a subset of illnesses may be linked to slivered onions used in the Quarter Pounder and sourced by a single supplier that serves three distribution centers. As a result, and in line with our safety protocols, all local restaurants have been instructed to remove this product from their supply and we have paused the distribution of all slivered onions in the impacted area.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we are also temporarily removing the Quarter Pounder from restaurants in the impacted area, including Colorado, Kansas, Utah and Wyoming, as well as portions of Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, and Oklahoma. We take food safety extremely seriously and it’s the right thing to do. Impacted restaurants are receiving a stock recovery notice today and should reach out to their field supply chain manager or distribution center with any questions.

“We are working in close partnership with our suppliers to replenish supply for the Quarter Pounder in the coming weeks (timing will vary by local market). In the meantime, all other menu items, including other beef products (including the Cheeseburger, Hamburger, Big Mac, McDouble and the Double Cheeseburger) are unaffected and available. We will continue to work with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and are committed to providing timely updates as we restore our full menu.

Shedeur Sanders tipped to replace $37 million underwhelming quarterback in high NFL Draft pick prediction

COLORADO Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders has been predicted to replace a former No. 1 overall pick.

Sanders has had a productive NCAA college football season under his father and Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders.

Shedeur’s stock has been on the rise thanks to his play in the first seven games of the season.

He has 19 passing touchdowns and six interceptions along with two rushing touchdowns.

Mock drafts have been coming out, and The Draft Network’s Ryan Fowler has Miami Hurricane’s Cam Ward, Sanders, and Alabama Crimson Tide’s Jalen Milroe being selected with the No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 picks.

The analyst currently believes the Carolina Panthers will select Sanders.

“As the weeks progress, this continues to look like the path Carolina could entertain less than two years after drafting Bryce Young with the top pick,” Fowler wrote Sunday.

“Sanders is an extremely mature and intelligent processor under center with the zip and touch to threaten all levels of the field.

“A primary pocket passer, his ability to win from the shoulders up separates him from many of the QBs in the class.”

Fowler brought up the 2023 first-overall selection Young, who has been disappointing in his NFL career thus far.

Young was benched after he struggled during the season’s first two games, completing 31 of 56 passes for 245 yards, no touchdowns, and three interceptions.

He was also sacked six times as the Panthers were outscored by a combined score of 73-13 in two losses.

Last season, Young started 16 games, going 2-14 while completing just under 60 percent of his passes.

The 2023 Heisman Trophy winner threw 10 touchdown passes and 10 interceptions.

After it appeared Carolina had given up on Young, the team will start the $37 million signal-caller in Week 8 after Andy Dalton sprained his thumb during a car accident that involved his family this week.

It will be a tough task for Young, who will be going up against a Denver Broncos defense that has allowed the third-fewest points in the league.

As for Sanders, he could be an option for a Panthers team that could use a complete reset.

Drafting a quarterback can allow second-year offensive-minded NFL head coach Dave Canales a chance to hand-pick his own quarterback.

Sanders will hope to guide the Buffaloes to its sixth win of the season when they face the Cincinnati Bearcats on Saturday night.

Colorado is coming off a 34-7 win over the Arizona Wildcats.

Sanders completed 23 of 33 passes for two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Eerie remark Zodiac Killer suspect Arthur Leigh Allen made to students who he ‘drugged & brought along for sick murders’

THE Zodiac Killer’s identity has remained a mystery for over 50 years, despite police publicly naming school teacher Arthur Leigh Allen as the prime suspect in the brutal murders.

Now, over 30 years after his death, people who knew Allen throughout their childhoods have shared the chilling clues that led them to believe that Allen was the notorious serial killer.

The Zodiac Killer is suspected of murdering at least five victims between December 1968 and October 1969 that police tied directly to him, but cops could never confirm the total number of killings.

He terrorized northern California for years by writing messages in code and demanding they be published in local newspapers or else he’d kill more people.

Police identified Allen as the main suspect in the case, but never obtained enough evidence to arrest him before he died in 1992.

In Netflix’s new three-part documentary called This is the Zodiac Speaking, a family who was close to Allen at the time of the murders shared more insight into the suspect – who they believe was the serial killer.

David and Connie Seawater were Allen’s former students who became close with the beloved teacher in the 1960s due to his friendship with their mom, Phyllis, the doc revealed.

The kids, along with their younger brother Don, viewed Allen as a father figure who joined them for family dinners and often took the children on trips to the beach or the movie theater.

EERIE REMARK

After reviewing years of hints and strange behavior, Connie said in the series she now believes Allen gave her clues that he was the Zodiac Killer as they remained close even after she was an adult.

She said she asked Allen point-blank if he was the Zodiac Killer when the pair went sailing together in 1991 – a year before his death.

Allen eerily responded that if he told her the truth, then he’d have to kill her.

“I thought it was a big joke,” Connie said in the docuseries.

However, the Seawater kids had become wary of Allen over the years as a few field trips ended in strange circumstances.

David and Connie said that a beach day in 1993 ended early when Allen ran to them with what appeared to be blood on his hands and made them leave the beach.

The kids became suspicious when they found that Robert Domingos, 18, and Linda Edwards, 17, were murdered around that time.

NIGHTMARE TRIP

In another questionable instance, the pair shared that Allen took them on a trip to a racetrack in Riverside, which is about seven hours away from San Francisco, when they were both in high school in October 1966.

Zodiac Killer's victims

The Zodiac Killer claimed to have committed 37 murders. However, police only ever confirmed seven victims:

  • David Faraday, 17, and Betty Lou Jensen, 15, were shot to death on December 20, 1968
  • Michael Mageau, 19, was shot on July 4, 1969 and survived
  • Darlene Ferrin, 22, was shot and killed on July 4, 1969
  • Bryan Calvin Hartnell, 20, was stabbed on September 27, 1969 and survived
  • Cecelia Ann Shepard, 22, was stabbed to death on September 27, 1969
  • Paul Lee Stine, 29, was shot and killed on October 11, 1969

Two days after the trip started on October 28, Connie recalls finding David in a deep sleep in a motel where the group was staying. She went for a drive with Allen and alleged he put his hands down her pants.

In the documentary, Connie said she returned to the hotel and drank some juice, which led her to a deep sleep.

She said she woke up with memory loss and couldn’t remember anything but Allen bringing the high schoolers to the car on October 31.

David and Connie believe that while they were unconscious throughout the trip, Allen murdered a woman named Cheri Jo Bates, who was found dead on October 30, 1966. Bates’ murder has never been solved.

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND

The Seawaters continued their relationship with Allen after he was fired from an elementary school in 1962 for having a firearm on school grounds.

In 1968, Allen was fired from the next elementary school he worked at and charged after he allegedly molested students.

He was arrested for the crime in 1974 and pleaded guilty. Coincidentally, the Zodiac murders stopped in 1974.

Allen spent three years in prison and served five years of felony probation until 1982.

His criminal background combined with digging by Robert Graysmith, who wrote Zodiac: The Shocking True Story, led police to consider Allen as a suspect in the Zodiac case.

Eyewitness accounts also implicated Allen after Zodiac survivors noted similarities in voice and stature with the killer.

PHONE CALL ‘CONFESSION’

When Allen’s health began to rapidly decline in 1992, David said he called to check in on the former teacher due to his mom’s suggestion.

David recalled Allen breaking down in tears on the phone and confessing to drugging them as kids and molesting Connie.

He said Allen confessed to being the Zodiac Killer after David asked him.

However, Allen maintained his innocence throughout interviews while he was alive.

“I know that deep in my soul,” he said in 1991.

“I’ve never been known for good luck, and I guess this is pretty much living proof of it. I couldn’t murder anyone.”

CHILLING LETTERS

Allen died of heart disease aged 58 at his home on August 26, 1992.

While Allen was publicly identified as a suspect, multiple other men have also been accused of being the Zodiac Killer in the decades since the mass hysteria, including deceased veteran Gary Francis Poste.

The Seawater kids said their mom never admitted to believing that Allen was the killer.

However, the series revealed that after Phyllis’ death in 2017, her kids discovered countless letters between her and Allen that they found incriminating.

“Every time someone mentioned police to me I’d jump,” Allen wrote in one of the letters, saying in another one that his palms turned “sweaty” when he saw headlines about murder.

In another letter, Allen wrote, “The most dangerous thing is when I almost decided to confess.”

This is the Zodiac Speaking is available for streaming on Netflix.

Seven people were taken to hospital as a precaution.

The other residents of the address were evacuated to a location where they can receive appropriate care.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Third, of the Major Crime Investigation Team, said: “Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences are with the families and loved ones of those who tragically died and they are being supported by officers.

“As part of our investigation, we have made one arrest to enable us to establish whether there have been actions or omissions which are grossly negligent and gather as much information as we can about what has happened.

“It is important to note that the arrest process also provides certain legal protection to individuals and I would ask for the media and public to avoid speculating any further now that legal proceedings are active.

“We know that the residents of Swanage will be feeling the impact of this incident immensely and we would like to thank everyone for the care and respect that has been shown throughout the day.

“Our local neighbourhood policing team will be on hand to provide support – we know this is a difficult time and we are doing all we can to minimise the impact on the community while we conduct inquiries in the area.”

LA Lakers make major rule change request to NBA after one game of season that affected LeBron and Bronny James

THE LA Lakers have made a request for a major new rule change – just one game into the 2024-25 NBA season.

The 17-time champions started their campaign off with a 110-103 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

JJ Redick, new head coach of the Lakers, was less than pleased with a detail in the game[/caption]

The Tuesday night showdown made history with LeBron and Bronny James becoming the first father and son duo to play together.

But new Lakers head coach JJ Redick was not pleased following the victory, complaining in his post match press conference.

First of all, he had issues with the number of 3 pointers his side missed in the first half.

More importantly, he had major problems with the BALL used in the NBA Opening Night clash.

The 40-year-old claimed it affected his side, and called for used balls to now be allowed during games.

“There was even some 3’s there in the second half that I thought were wide open and we just couldn’t knock them down,” he said.

“I’m going to send in a request to the league tomorrow that we can play with worn-in basketballs.

“I’m being dead serious.

“I’m not sure why we’re playing in real games with brand new basketballs.

“Anybody who has ever touched an NBA ball, brand new, it’s a different feel and touch than a worn-in basketball.”

Redick revealed he only found out about the ball issue while catching a rebound in the second half.

“I didn’t realize it until a timeout, there was a long rebound and I grabbed it.

“I was like ‘what, why are playing with this ball?’.

“Give the guys the opportunity to pick a good basketball.

“You think I’m joking but I’m narcotic.”

Lakers fan reacted with shock at his claims – but were impressed Redick’s level of detail.

They took to social media to hail their new head coach, who is taking them into a “new era” for the team.

One supporter said: “This man really a basketball geek, I respect it heavily.”

Another added:”Whoever suggested using brand new balls obviously has never played basketball before.

“Don’t know why you let people run the nba that don’t know about basketball.”

“I’m so sorry to say I do need to reschedule the next few shows from 10/23 through 11/2.

“Thank you for understanding – I’ll make it up to you – JT.”

One fan commented: “We’re going to miss you in Columbus, but rest up and feel better.”

Another added: “We love you. Please rest up and take care of yourself.”

While a third wrote: “Gotta protect that beautiful voice of yours. Feel better soon.”

In addition, the singer also revealed when the respective shows will now take place.

The October 23 show in Columbus, Ohio has been moved to February 27, 2025.

Justin will instead play his Detroit, Michigan show on February 20, 2025 – rather than October 25, 2024.

His upcoming October 27 gig in Chicago, Illinois will now be held on February 14, 2025.

Meanwhile, the October 28 show in Milwaukee, Wisconsin has been moved to February 22, 2025.

As for fans in Saint Paul, Minnesota, their turn will come on February 24, 2025 – having initially been slated for October 31.

Last but not least the show in Grand Rapids, Michigan on November 2 has been moved to February 18, 2025.

It follows Justin having pulled out of another tour date earlier this month.

He had been due to perform in Newark, New Jersey – but was forced to postpone after sustaining an injury.

Justin penned at the time: “I’m so sorry to postpone tonight’s show. I have an injury that is preventing me from performing.”

He added: “I’m so disappointed to not see you all – but I’m working to reschedule ASAP.”
