Why Venom 1 + 2 Worked: Revisiting Sony’s Only Successful Spider-Man Spinoffs

Venom: The Last Dance is hitting theaters soon and it’s still kind of boggling to me that this franchise made it to three movies. Venom as a character is intrinsically linked to Spider-Man, but the two characters aren’t connected at all in the films. Plus, Sony’s other spinoff movies include the critically reviled Madame Web […]

Drivers risk $3,500 repair bills if they fail to do crucial check before cold weather – use 50/50 rule to avoid damage

DRIVERS have been urged to make sure their car is in top shape before cold weather rolls in by doing crucial checks that could save thousands of dollars.

An auto expert shared the most important car parts to inspect – and neglecting one area during the winter could leave drivers with repair bills up to $3,500.

It’s also important for drivers to check their tire pressure (stock image[/caption]

Ron Krauch is an automotive writer with four decades of experience working with cars.

His love for cars started as a child as he grew up around an auto shop in Baltimore where his dad worked.

He went on to attend racing schools and work for industry giants like Pontiac, Ford, and CarMax.

Krauch offered advice to drivers about which parts of their cars to check ahead of the winter in an interview with The U.S. Sun.

The auto expert, who writes for CarsAndConvos.com, said that it’s imperative for drivers to top off or replace fluids before the winter.

Drivers should ensure their car’s coolant or antifreeze is properly mixed and at the correct level to prevent freezing.

The 50/50 rule, half antifreeze and half water, is usually the standard for properly mixing the liquid.

Antifreeze lowers the freezing point of water in your car engine’s cooling system to prevent it from turning to ice and expanding in cold temperatures.

If coolant is used properly, the water could freeze and expand – cracking your engine block.

Fixing a cracked engine block isn’t typically cheap, as CarBrain estimates the damage typically costs at least $3,500 to repair.

The auto company says that it’s often better to just sell a car with a cracked engine block rather than try to replace it as it could take long hours to fix and cost $1,500 for just the parts alone.

CHECK YOUR FLUIDS

Coolant isn’t the only fluid you should check, as Krauch recommends getting an oil change before the cold.

“Use the correct oil for winter, as some oils thicken in cold temperatures, making it harder for the engine to start,” the expert told The U.S. Sun.

He also recommended taking care of your windshield wiper fluid and making sure your wiper blades are in good condition.

More winter car advice from AAA

The American Automobile Association shared advice on preparing your car for the winter months.

AAA gave the following tips for drivers getting ready for cold weather:

  • Get your brakes checked
  • Check tire pressure
  • Test your car’s battery
  • Apply water repellent to your windshield
  • Check antifreeze levels
  • Clean your headlights
  • Have emergency tools available like jumper cables, salt, and an ice scraper

“Use winter washer fluid that won’t freeze and fill up the reservoir,” Krauch said.

TREADING LIGHTLY

Krauch also said it’s important for drivers to check their tires and tire pressure before winter.

“Cold weather causes tire pressure to drop, so check and inflate them to the recommended level. Under-inflated tires can reduce traction,” he explained.

The expert recommends drivers in snowy areas switch to winter tires as they have a better grip on snow and ice.

Drivers should also make sure their tires have sufficient tread before hitting wet or icy roads – which you can check using a coin.

TEST YOUR BATTERY

Finally, Krauch says drivers should inspect their car batteries because “cold temperatures reduce battery performance.”

You should have your battery tested, especially if it’s more than three years old.

Drivers should also check that their battery terminals are clean and corrosion-free to maintain a good connection.

If you’re taking your car to the shop for any of these crucial checks, Krauch previously warned against three services offered by dealerships that could waste your time and money.

Brits can get iPhone’s huge AI upgrade in days just by changing a setting including trick to remove people from selfies

BRITS will be getting a major (and free) iPhone upgrade in days – and there’s a trick to make it even better.

It’s the next big iPhone update – iOS 18.1 – that will write text for you, let you remove objects from photos, and summarise your notifications instantly.

And due to the slow roll-out of the AI-powered Apple Intelligence, the launch is a little confusing.

Some of the best new AI features are (for now) locked to devices using U.S. English.

So by changing your phone’s language, you can access some of the new tricks here in Britain.

But you’ll get them eventually if you’re willing to wait.

WHAT’S COMING IN IOS 18.1?

The iOS 18.1 is notable because it introduces some of the new Apple Intelligence features.

So there’s a new feature calling Writing Tools, which will let you use AI to write, rewrite, proofread, and summarise text in almost any app.

There’s a new design for Siri that will use a new screen-edge glow animation to show when you’re chatting.

And you should be able to talk a bit more naturally to Siri, including being able to change your mind mid-sentence.

You’ll get summarised notifications, as well as suggest replies in the Messages app.

There’s also a new Clean Up feature that will let you remove any objects (including people) from the backgrounds of your photos.

So you can literally delete an entire person from a selfie, if you like.

And they’ll be replaced with what Apple’s AI thinks is appropriate filler.

HOW CAN BRITS GET THE APPLE INTELLIGENCE FEATURES?

There are three ways to get the new Apple Intelligence features.

The first is to simply install iOS 18.1 and then change your language.

Writing Tools will help you quickly rewrite and proofread text[/caption]

You’ll need to set your device and Siri language to U.S. English.

That will mean your iPhone will respond to you in U.S. English, which might drive you mad – but you may not even notice.

The second way is to install the iOS beta, which is a test version of the software.

That’s because iOS 18.2 is entering developer beta today, and adds support for UK English.

iOS 18 devices – can your iPhone get it?

Here are the devices that can get the new iOS 18 update

  • iPhone SE (2nd generation)
  • iPhone SE (3rd generation)
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro
  • iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12
  • iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12 Pro
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13
  • iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13 Pro
  • iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14
  • iPhone 14 Plus
  • iPhone 14 Pro
  • iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 15
  • iPhone 15 Plus
  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 16
  • iPhone 16 Plus
  • iPhone 16 Pro
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max

Installing the developer beta is a little complicated and probably not worth the trouble.

But iOS 18.2 will probably arrive in public beta in the next few weeks, so follow our guide to getting that instead – how to install iPhone iOS beta.

The third way is to simply wait until iOS 18.2 arrives to the general public as a proper release in December.

That will add full support for UK English, with no need to change your language.

That’s probably the best option for most users.

But if you’re a keen gadget fan, you might want to just try changing your language in iOS 18.1 instead.

I’ve tried the new iPad Mini and it’s great for Netflix – but its tiny size has an even bigger perk

THE iPad Mini is back to the delight of its adoring fans – and I’ve been trying out the revamped (and ultra-portable) tablet.

Apple released a new version of the iPad Mini just last week, three years after the previous model.

The new iPad Mini has a more powerful processor that can support the AI Apple Intelligence features[/caption]

The model is at the cheaper end of Apple’s tablet line-up at £499 / $499.

It’s still pricier than the regular iPad (£329 / $349), but costs less than the iPad Air and iPad Pro.

The main perk of the iPad Mini is its smaller size, owing to the shrunken 8.3-inch Liquid Retina screen.

For contrast, the new iPhone 16 Pro Max screen size measures 6.9 inches from corner to corner.

And the regular iPad comes in at just shy of 11 inches.

The point of the iPad Mini is to give you roughly the experience of owning a normal iPad, but in a far more portable way.

Some people simply don’t like lugging around an iPad, or even holding one up.

The iPad Mini is far neater, fits easily in a coat pocket or handbag, and is a bit easier to whip out on a packed train or cramped flight.

It’s got a sharp enough display with great colour accuracy and enough brightness to work by the pool.

And it looks great too: I really like the purple model I’ve been trying out, but it also comes in similarly slick blue, space grey, and starlight options.

The gadget is powered by the A17 Pro chip. Apple fans will know that’s the same processor in last year’s top-end iPhone 15 Pro Max.

It powers some Apple Intelligence AI features like a more natural Siri, Writing Tools for proof-reading, and Clean Up to remove unwanted objects from pictures.

Several Apple Intelligence features will be available at launch in the United States, but Brits will need to wait for a December update.

Battery life is promised at “all-day”, and that feels about right.

I tried using it as my main leisure device, so playing some games (including the always-addictive League of Legends spin-off Wild Rift), watching a bit of TV and YouTube, and browsing the web.

And I struggled to wear it down in a day. It’ll get on just fine on a long flight.

It comes with 128GB of storage as standard, which isn’t enormous but will suit most users just fine.

Power users who need more can upgrade it to 256GB or 512GB storage for a fee.

MORE FEATURES...COMING SOON!

  • Image Playground allows users to create playful images in moments.
  • Image Wand is a new tool in the Apple Pencil tool palette that can transform a rough sketch into a polished image.
  • Emoji will be taken to an entirely new level with the ability to create original Genmoji by simply typing a description, or by selecting a photo of a friend or family member.
  • Siri will be able to draw on a user’s personal context to deliver intelligence that is tailored to them. It will also gain onscreen awareness to understand and take action with users’ content, as well as take hundreds of new actions in and across Apple and third-party apps.
  • With ChatGPT integrated into experiences within iPadOS 18, users have the option to access its expertise, as well as its image- and document-understanding capabilities, within Siri and Writing Tools without needing to jump between tools. And privacy protections are built in so a user’s IP address is obscured, and OpenAI won’t store requests. Users can access ChatGPT for free without creating an account, and ChatGPT’s data-use policies apply for those who choose to connect their account.

What you need to think about before buying an iPad Mini is whether you want this as a work device.

Honestly, if you’re doing proper work, you probably want to consider a bigger iPad.

Full-size iPads can reasonably replace a laptop due to their screen size.

You can sketch on it fine with an Apple Pencil, but you’d benefit from the larger canvas of an iPad proper.

a group of apple ipads are stacked on top of each other

There are four colours to choose from[/caption]

And doing any serious typing, creating presentations, or photo-editing is better off done with a larger display.

I think the iPad Mini is much better suited as a leisure device: it’s easy to move around, looks great, and handles Netflix shows and games perfectly.

Its also a great size for gaming specifically: with Wild Rift, I am able to enjoy the benefits of having a bigger screen than an iPhone, but it’s not as unwieldy as a giant iPad in terms of control.

It might be the best size format if you’re gaming with the touchscreen itself.

There’s a USB-C port on the bottom and a Touch ID fingerprint scanner at the top[/caption]

If that’s your thing, this is the device for you.

And it’s fine as a secondary device to your main work machine, if that’s what you need.

It’s got a USB-C port so it’s very compatible with newer iPhones, Macs, AirPods, and so on.

And you can buy accessories for it like Apple’s fairly popular Smart Folio case (which comes in matching colours). Accessorise!

The Sun says: The iPad Mini is the perfect portable size for a casual Netflix and gaming machine. It’s a great leisure tablet, or as an add-on to your work set-up – but power-users might want to upgrade to the bigger iPad Air.

All prices in this article were correct at the time of writing, but may have since changed.

Always do your own research before making any purchase.

And he returns on December 21 on the undercard of Tyson Fury’s rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.

He faces 22–1 Aussie Demsey McKean – a former sparring partner of Anthony Joshua’s – on the bill in Saudi Arabia.

But already talk has turned to a future battle of the British unbeatens against 10-0 Moses Itauma.

And Fisher responded with: “I will fight anyone. Anyone out there I will fight.

“What they’ve got to realise is my value I bring to the table but listen, I’m not a Man City, I’m not an AC Milan, I’m not a Liverpool but I am cold night away in Stoke.

“And to beat me you’ve got to pull your socks up and put your on to beat me.

“But listen, Moses Itauma, a great talent I’ve got so much respect for him and that is a massive fight for the British public down the line and I think that can happen.”

The pair have sparred in the past and even agreed to go out for Fisher’s trademark Chinese takeaway after.

And Itauma added: “Me and Johnny have had a few conversations.

“I don’t hate the man but listen I feel like the fight will there on the table if we want it.

“One day we’ll have it. Maybe a Chinese after.”

AARON RODGERS has suffered a new injury to add to the New York Jets woes.

The star quarterback has been fighting a number of issues in the 2024-25 NFL season.

Rodgers missed the whole of the 2023-24 season with a ruptured Achilles[/caption]

He has had problems with his knee and ankle in recent weeks, in a tough return to action.

But the Week 8 injury report has revealed a new issue, with his hamstring now wounded.

And it is feared the 40-year-old’s mobility could have been effected in their 37-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 7.

“It’s new,” confirmed Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich.

“Something that kinda flared up this past game.

“They’re gonna assess it all week long.

“He’s gonna treat his butt off like he always does.

“I don’t anticipate this affecting him in playing.”

Rodgers is understood to have suffered a hamstring issue a few weeks ago.

But it was never reported by the Jets on the official NFL injury report.

The New York-based team take on their old rivals the New England Patriots this weekend.

And Rodgers is still set to start in the quarterback position.

He missed the whole of last season after rupturing his Achilles just four plays into Week 1.

The Jets have had a dreadful season so far, going 2-5 on the year.

NFL head coach annual salaries

1. Andy Reid - Chiefs - $20 million

2. Sean Payton – Broncos – $18 million

=3. Mike Tomlin – Steelers – $16 million

=3. Jim Harbaugh – Chargers – $16 million

5. Sean McVay – Rams – $15 million

6. Kyle Shanahan – 49ers – $14 million

7. John Harbaugh – Ravens – $12 million

=8. Dan Campbell – Lions – $11 million

=8. Sean McDermott – Bills – $11 million

10. Mike MacDonald – Seahawks – $10 million

They are third in the AFC East, behind the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins.

Only the Patriots, who have a 1-6 record, are below them in the table.

Meanwhile, Ulbrich confirmed Haason Reddick is set to play this week after his contract standoff ended.

“I would anticipate he plays,” he added.

“He’s an experienced player. He’s played in a similar defense to ours.

“So I think as far as the schematic stuff that he’s got to get caught up on.

“I don’t think that’s going to be a huge struggle for him.

“So now it’s just seeing where he’s at physically.”
