From legendary strongman to avid budgie breeder – the unforgettable life of beloved Olympian Geoff Capes

GIANT policeman Geoff Capes, who became Britain’s best-loved strongman, has died aged 75.

Shot putter Capes — who stood 6ft 5½in and weighed 26st — represented Great Britain at three Olympics.

He was Commonwealth champion and European champion twice and since 1980 has been the country’s shot put record holder with a throw of 21.68metres.

But the star was best known as the World’s Strongest Man, who could tear London phone directories in half and bend three-foot long, one-inch diameter steel bars.

But remarkably, his hobby was breeding budgerigars which he held gently in his giant hands.

And he became the president of the Budgerigar Society and was never happier than when he won the world budgie championship and travelled the globe judging bird shows.

Last night fans took to social media to pay tribute to the beloved strongman.

I was a hell of a fighter as well. If the next town came down on a Friday and there were only eight or nine of them I’d say, ‘Go back and get some more.

Geoff on his youth

One said on X: “I watched him as a young man — my sincerest condolences to his family and friends, we’ll miss you Geoff.”

Another added: “Sad to hear the passing of Geoff Capes. A fixture growing up on our TV and during athletics coverage.”

Geoffrey Lewis Capes was born in 1949 in Holbeach, Lincs, the seventh of nine children.

And trouble was never far away.

He remembered: “I was a hell of a fighter as well. If the next town came down on a Friday and there were only eight or nine of them I’d say, ‘Go back and get some more.’

“I’d fight them on my own. I was quite quiet, but there was an inner aggression.

“My headmaster, a guy called Joe Fathers, took great pleasure in trying to knock it out of me. He had a choice of canes.

“On the last day I went into his office, I took the canes off the wall in the office in front of him and walked out.”

Gifted sportsman

Geoff’s salvation was Holbeach Athletic Club where he was coached by BBC athletics commentator Stuart Storey.

A gifted sportsman, Capes represented Lincolnshire at basketball, football and cross-country. But shot put was where he could channel the chip on his shoulder.

Capes said: “I threw in bare feet in a concrete circle — and came second from last.”

Capes would hitch-hike to athletics competitions and was told by Storey that he would achieve great things if he could just direct his energy.

But growing up in the Lincs fens Geoff had a softer side — he was fascinated by the natural world and cared for injured birds and animals.

After leaving school he worked as a coalman and an agricultural labourer before joining Cambridgeshire Constabulary in 1970. He served in the force for ten years.

He was allowed time off to compete at athletics meetings, but on a copper’s salary he could barely afford a daily diet that included six pounds of red meat, a dozen eggs and a large tin of baked beans.

He also consumed two tins of pilchards, one and a half pounds of cottage cheese, a packet of cereal, two large loaves of bread with a pound of butter. All washed down with a pint of orange juice and seven pints of milk.

In a recent interview Capes said: ‘I enjoyed my life and I went around the world. How many people can say that?’[/caption]

In his last interview he said: “I ate like a f***ing horse! Anything I could get my hands on. But nearly all protein.”

Capes, who would lift 120 tons in training each week, did sponsorship deals that helped him to bypass the Olympics’ strict amateur rules.

He had advertising slogans “Butcher Brown is the best in town” and his Talbot Estate car displayed “Dewhurst: Master Butchers” on the side.

Capes went on to become the most capped British male athlete of all time, with 67 international credits, and in 1983 he was voted Britain’s best-ever field athlete.

Just before his last Olympics, Moscow 1980, he won Britain’s first strongest man competition and became a household name. Tests of strength such as bending steel bars, lifting a platform of bunny girls, pulling lorries, arm wrestles and tug of war gave the show cult status.

And Capes was soon in demand for everything from 17 pantomime appearances and children’s TV to performances at the London Palladium with Bobby Davro and TV ads.

By 1983 he was officially the world’s strongest man but the following year lost the title to Jón Páll Sigmarsson.

The Icelander who was 11 years younger, taunted: “The King has lost his crown!”

But Geoff swore: “I’ll be back.” The next year he took the title and roared: “The King has not lost his crown!”

Once, at Scotland’s Braemar Games, he used so much resin competing that when he was congratulated by the late Queen, their hands stuck together, causing Her Majesty to roar with laughter.

Geoff’s son Lewis and daughter Emma were both shot putters, while two of his grandchildren, Donovan, 19, and Lawson, 15, train at the shot put ring Capes built in his home village of Stoke Rochford, Lincs.

In a recent interview he said: “I enjoyed my life and I went around the world. How many people can say that?”

Diddy ‘forced staff to carry bags of pink cocaine with them at all times’ former insider claims in horror lawsuit

SEAN ‘Diddy’ Combs allegedly demanded staff members to carry around pink cocaine, a former insider has claimed in a lawsuit.

It’s been suggested that Combs, 54, would pressure “all employees, from the butler to the chef to the housekeepers” to keep small bags of the drug with them at all times.

The lawsuit also alleges that they would be forced to “walk around with a pouch or fanny pack filled with cocaine, GHB, ecstasy, marijuana gummies”.

Filed by Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones in February, the lawsuit further alleges drug use was rampant within the rapper’s business enterprise.

Rodney Jones sued Combs and accused him of sexual harassment.

At the time of the filing, Combs’ team denied allegations, saying they have evidence that suggests otherwise.

Jones helped produce Combs’ most recent album, and is described to have once been an “insider” close to the rapper, abc7 claims.

Regarding Rodney Jones’ lawsuit, Sean Combs’s legal team said in an August 26 statement to The Sun: “Mr. Jones’s lawsuit is pure fiction — a shameless attempt to create media hype and extract a quick settlement.

“There was no RICO conspiracy and Mr. Jones was not threatened, groomed, assaulted, or trafficked. We look forward to proving – in a court of law – that all of Mr. Jones’s claims are made-up and must be dismissed.”

A lawyer for Combs has previously said: “We have overwhelming, indisputable proof that his claims are complete lies.

“Our attempts to share this proof with Mr. Jones’ attorney, Tyrone Blackburn, have been ignored, as Mr. Blackburn has refused to return our calls.

“We look forward to addressing these ridiculous claims in court, and intend to take all appropriate action against all who are attempting to peddle.”

Jones also claimed in the suit that Combs forced him to solicit sex workers and pressured him to engage in sex acts with them and others.

Combs filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit launched by Jones in response.

It comes after the rapper has been accused of drugging a personal trainer before passing him around to his celebrity friends, claims the latest lawsuit against the disgraced rapper and mogul.

Combs, along with several others allegedly sexually assaulted the man repeatedly and left him feeling like a “party favor,” according to the court docs.

The personal trainer claimed he first met Combs through a client who said the rapper enjoyed watching his videos online.

He was then invited to an “exclusive afterparty” at Comb’s $40 million mansion in the Holmby Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles following the 2022 BET Awards, says the suit.

Combs won the lifetime achievement award at the event.

After arriving at the home, the alleged victim says he was made to sign a nondisclosure agreement before being handed a drink.

He then alleges he was forced to drink the tequila soda with a cranberry juice mixer before being taken into a small room, according to the documents filed on Sunday.

Inside, around a dozen people – including some well-known figures – were allegedly engaging in a group-sex activity, the suit reads.

Shortly after entering the room, the alleged victim said he started to “feel disoriented, dizzy and weak.”

Combs is then accused of taking off the accuser’s pants and giving him non-consensual oral sex, according to the filing.

The hip-hop icon then allegedly told the personal trainer to go over to another person in the room.

The individual has been described as “Celebrity A” in the legal filings.

The alleged victim says he was in and out of consciousness during his time at the party.

More partygoers said to be both men and women, then took turns performing sexual acts with the fitness influencer, according to his attorney, Tony Buzbee, in the suit.

A spokesperson for Combs told The Sun, “It’s disappointing to see the media and social commentators twist moments into something they were not.”

Combs is currently being held in a Brooklyn jail cell as he faces criminal charges for sex trafficking and racketeering.

Buzbee has said he is representing over 100 accusers in a series of civil claims he is in the process of filing against the mogul, who continues to deny all charges against him.

The personal trainer’s accusations form seven new abuse allegations made by four men and three women led by attorney Buzbee.

Another of the cases accuses Combs of raping a 13-year-old girl.

The suit claims two other celebrities joined in with the alleged assault at a VMAs afterparty in New York, according to court documents.

The alleged victim claims she was attacked after having one drink that again left her feeling “woozy and lightheaded” at the house party in September 2000.

The now 37-year-old woman alleges she was raped by Diddy while the male and female celebrities watched.

Another of the fresh claims in the lawsuit alleges that Combs laced baby oil used at his so-called freak-off parties with a date rape drug.

The suit claims Combs was known for dosing his guests with the date-rape drug GHB, mixing it in drinks and body oils, the New York Daily News reported.

Another new accuser alleged that he was abused as a 17-year-old aspiring artist at a party with Combs.

The rapper has denied all allegations against him.

The pair were at a Manhattan hotel penthouse in 2022 when Combs told him that “he could make him a star,” say court files.

The complainant alleged that Combs drugged him with a drink he handed him when he arrived.

Combs is then accused of grabbing the underage boy’s hand and forcing him to lie down in a bedroom full of several other people, according to the court docs.

He then allegedly molested the teen’s genitals “for an extended period of time” trying to get him aroused.

The former Bad Boys Record producer has reportedly now demanded to know the names of his alleged victims.

Combs is currently being held in Brooklyn’s notorious Metropolitan Detention Center and has been denied bail on multiple occasions.

He posted on Instagram for the first time since he was arrested and slammed with sex trafficking charges to wish his two-year-old daughter Love a happy birthday.

And on Wednesday, Combs’ six children released a joint statement defending their dad and blasting “conspiracy theories” against him.

They vowed to “hold onto the truth” and stay united as Combs faces a trial next year.

The statement added: “Many have judged both him and us based on accusations, conspiracy theories, and false narratives that have spiraled into absurdity on social media.”

Combs’ trial date for the criminal charges of sex trafficking and racketeering has been set for May 5 next year.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges, with his lawyers Erica Wolff saying the claims are “false and defamatory.”

Graves alleged when she awoke, she found herself tied up and restrained while Combs and Sherman raped her.

Tupperware a step closer to coming out of bankruptcy as new owners to take on $63.8 million debt and revamp iconic brand

TUPPERWARE is getting a second life after filing for bankruptcy in September.

The homeware and container brand has agreed to sell itself to a group of lenders instead of a scheduled asset auction.

The company faced considerable debt and revenue struggles in recent years (stock image)[/caption]

Those lenders include Alden Global Capital and Stonehill Capital Management, per a Tuesday press release.

While the sale isn’t official yet, the lenders plan to buy Tupperware for $23.5 million and relieve $63.8 million in debt in exchange for ownership, according to court documents obtained by The U.S. Sun.

The sale hearing will take place on October 29 in a bankruptcy court for the District of Delaware, and if the deal is approved, it should be finalized by early November.

An auction for Tupperware’s assets was previously set but is now canceled, given the proposed transaction between the iconic company, Alden Global Capital, and Stonehill Capital Management.

The lender group would re-introduce Tupperware as The New Tupperware Company throughout several phases and would take on a “start-up mentality,” according to Tuesday’s release.

They’d also own “all intellectual property needed to create and market” Tupperware and its products through the proposed deal.

The owners also would take control of Tupperware’s operating assets and transition it to a privately held company instead of a public one.

Focus will continue to be placed on the United States, Canada, and Mexico markets, but the lenders intend to put emphasis on five new additions, including Brazil, China, South Korea, India, and Malaysia.

LOOKING AHEAD

With the new additions, other international markets will be pulled back, per Retail Dive.

The New Tupperware Company will also continue to sell products through various e-commerce sites, independent consultants, and retail partners.

Tupperware’s current CEO, Laurie Ann Goldman, noted that the lenders had an aligned vision for the future of the brand.

“Tupperware is considered the inventor of the party-selling model and made no-leak food conservation products famous,” Ann said in a statement about the proposed sale.

“Over the last year, we created a new strategy and operating approach that is digital-first, technology-led and asset-light, and preserved a global footprint for the company.”

“We’ve made tremendous progress and are delighted this group of forward-thinking investors share our vision and will partner with us to grow,” she continued.

How does bankruptcy work?

Bankruptcy is a specific legal process that helps companies eliminate debt they can't repay.

The process allows businesses to start fresh and gain access to new credit.

Supervised by federal courts, bankruptcies allow a company to sell off its assets more easily to pay off creditors, according to Investopedia.

Chapter 11, a common process for companies, is used to restructure a business with the goal of remaining open – even if it means selling off most of the company’s properties.

Chapter 7, on the other hand, sells all of a company’s assets, putting it out of business.

Chapter 15, alternatively, allows for collaboration between American and foreign courts to conduct bankruptcy proceedings with “parties of interest involving more than one country,” per the United States Courts.

CREDIT CHAOS

Tupperware’s longstanding history began in 1946 after being founded by Earl Tupper.

It has gone through astronomical growth since then but, in recent years, found itself struggling with an inability to adapt to the e-commerce landscape.

The company nearly went bankrupt in the spring of 2023 before getting another deal with creditors that reduced interest payments on its outstanding debt, per ABC affiliate KFSN.

At the time of the Chapter 11 filing last month, that outstanding debt was a whopping $811.8 million.

Tupperware also closed its only plant in the United States earlier this year, laying off 148 employees, per a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Act filing.

It’s also one of several major companies to file for bankruptcy this year, including Big Lots, Ted Baker, and LL Flooring.
