13 Xbox Games With the Most Underrated Protagonists

Whenever a console or hardware brand releases numerous games each generation, most fans tend to completely overlook several titles. Xbox has experienced this on multiple occasions, as larger games often overshadow intriguing protagonists.

Well-known franchises like Dead Rising or Gears of War have had moments where certain protagonists or main characters didn’t receive the attention they deserved. Here are 13 Xbox protagonists who have not received the deserved attention.

13 – Shu (Blue Dragon)

Akira Toriyama collaborated on this entirely original project, which became stuck on the Xbox 360 and never saw a sequel or adaptation to another platform. Its protagonist, a young boy named Shu, along with his friends, wants to find a solution to save his village.

Despite being innocent, this character is quite bold when it comes to taking action to fight for what he cares about. This game deserved more attention than it received at the time.

12 – Derrick Cole (Breakdown)

This character never had a chance to shine again after his game in 2004, which was released exclusively for the original Xbox. Cole is a loyal agent who will do anything to find answers about his new powers, which offered unique mechanics for the time.

Developed by Namco, this game combined powers with first-person action and weapons, featuring a classic but effective protagonist.

11 – Joule Adams (ReCore)

Adams is a born explorer who, thanks to the mind of the creator of Metroid Prime, had a chance to star in a unique game with a spectacular world.

Without her robotic companion, who contributed to some of the game’s most memorable moments during its 2018 release, it would be unfair to judge this character. Largely ignored by most Xbox One players, the story of these characters deserves a sequel.

10 – Crimson Dragon

Panzer Dragoon, a niche game, received a unique opportunity on the Xbox One, where its niche fans could try its spiritual successor. Crimson Dragon had its chance to shine, but it never received the attention it deserved, considering how solid the game was, especially compared to its predecessors.

This adventure full of dragons offered a unique setting for players to fantasize about controlling these mythical beasts. Here, you control the protagonist who is capable of controlling dragons and sets out on orders.

9 – Joanna Dark (Perfect Dark)

The impossible competition with the PlayStation 2 kept all original Xbox games from getting the attention they deserved. However, one of the standout characters from that era was Joanna Dark from the Perfect Dark series.

Although she is fairly well-known among fans, she didn’t have the chance to shine and achieve the success she deserved as part of this futuristic action and espionage series.

8 – Damon Baird (Gears of War: Judgement)

Despite being one of Xbox’s biggest franchises, one of its characters didn’t get the chance to truly shine in his solo game. The Gears community initially criticized Damon Baird, but over time, they began to appreciate him as a decent man.

Although it was a good spin-off attempt, it didn’t achieve the sales the studio wanted, and this character’s opportunity to shine wasn’t fully realized in the game.

7 – Frank West (Dead Rising)

Although not as ignored as some other characters on this list, Frank West from the Dead Rising series didn’t receive the love he deserved when the game first debuted as an Xbox 360 exclusive. People viewed this title as pure fun and zombie-killing, rather than taking it seriously.

Even so, West has a fairly captivating story as a photographer who isn’t afraid to get in the middle of the action to report and bring the news to the people.

6 – Jaxon (Crackdown 3)

As a franchise that seemed dead due to not receiving the expected attention or sales, Xbox One gave it a new opportunity by adding a completely charismatic and spectacular character like Jaxon, played by the hilarious actor Terry Crews.

Microsoft made one of the best decisions to revive this franchise, but unfortunately, the public didn’t respond as expected, leading to the series’ continued neglect. The character deserves another chance.

5 – Nick Ramos (Dead Rising 3)

Bringing a more realistic approach to the series, Nick Ramos introduced some of the most original and enjoyable mechanics to Dead Rising 3. Regrettably, the Xbox One exclusive release of Dead Rising 3 failed to garner the attention it merited, thereby completely redefining the essence of the franchise.

It is arguably the best Dead Rising game in terms of gameplay, narrative, and other aspects that previously required refinement.

4 – The Player (Sunset Overdrive)

This game, one of the last non-exclusive PlayStation games developed by Insomniac Games, had many good ideas with its talkative and completely verbose protagonist.

Despite its unique concept, rhythmic gameplay, and lightning-fast gameplay, Xbox’s most ardent fans failed to give it the attention it deserved, leading to its eventual forgetfulness. The player had the ability to engage in a variety of activities with this protagonist.

3 – Marius Titus (Ryse: Son of Rome)

This is probably one of the most original games that Xbox One released at the time. Due to its spectacular combat mechanics and epic story, where Marius Titus had one legendary battle after another, this character had the potential to star in several similar games or sequels.

Once again, Microsoft didn’t give this character another opportunity to shine and have more spectacular battles.

2 – Jack Joyce (Quantum Break)

Remedy has proven it can create some of the most captivating games today, and Quantum Break is no exception. Jack Joyce is a more than fascinating protagonist who will do anything to save the people he cares about most while facing a threat far beyond his control.

Despite being an Xbox One exclusive, the game didn’t garner the attention it deserved from fans, and fans still recognize it as a solid title, albeit one that remains confined to that platform.

1 – Hero (Fable)

The hero that you control, is one of the most captivating and realistic characters Xbox has ever created. The amount of things this character can do in the game is incredible, adding a unique ‘English‘ charisma that made this series so popular and turned it into a cult franchise.

This protagonist, in particular, could become anything the player wanted while exploring this village full of colorful and exciting characters.

What are your thoughts on this list? Who do you think is the most underrated character? Let us know in the comments!
